“To enhance the time parents and family members spend with an infant that has just passed away through education, creativity and a Special Care Package.” The Three Little Angels Foundation is currently working with central Ohio area hospitals to institute a nursing education program. Currently we are active at Riverside Methodist Hospital and Memorial Hospital of Union County to teach nurses working in labor and delivery, postpartum, and NICU units from a parents’ perspective on infant loss. We share our story along with ways for nurses to help encourage parents to make memories with their baby. The Three Little Angels Foundation shares information on what to say (and not to say), being a guide to families, bathing and presenting the infant to parents, picture taking skills and what nurses can do to help parents get through the first days of loss. We are getting an overwhelming response to our education program, as most nurses never hear from families after a loss. They have no idea of what they did right or wrong. Until we shared how important it is for families to be able to make memories and what it means to us, as parents, they just didn’t know. Along with the education program, the Three Little Angels Foundation presents hospital staff with Special Care Packages to give to each family dealing with the death of an infant. Having the kit available gives nurses and hospital staff a quick reference to use before going in to see a family. The Special Care Package was designed by families that have lost, for families that have lost, as a way to help reduce regrets. We asked multiple families what they did that they were grateful for, and what they wished they would have gotten to do that they now regret. We came up with many ideas and our hope is that they will help turn this tragic experience into lasting memories for hurting families. |
